12 x 12 in 2014 Picture Book Writing Challenge

If you are a picture book writer (published or unpublished), you may be interested in the 12 x 12 in 2014 Picture Book Writing Challenge run by published picture book author Julie Hedlund.

The challenge is to write 12 picture book drafts in 12 months–a picture book a month for every month of 2014. It is open to anyone interested in writing picture books.  12 x 12 offers benefits for BOTH published and pre-published authors.

The sign up deadline is February 28, 2014.

You can find out more details and the benefits in participating at http://www.juliehedlund.com/registration-for-2014/

I participated in the challenge in 2012 and 2013 and did develop some manuscript ideas – not what I would could finished manuscripts, but nevertheless they have been added to my ideas book. Since Julie founded the 12×12 challenge in 2012 (from memory), it has been going from strength to strength.  Over 550 have registered to date, and many features have been added.

The following information is taken from Julie’s website at: http://www.juliehedlund.com/registration-for-2014/

For less than the cost of a single conference, picture book writers and illustrators can become members of 12 x 12 and get access to all the benefits of a writer’s conference — learning from experts, craft advice and assistance, the fellowship of community and the opportunity to submit completed, polished manuscripts — without having to travel. You’ll get the motivation and accountability you need to get those drafts finished, all with the support of the friendliest writing community on earth.

12 x 12 is a global community, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If you join, you will be encouraged and supported as you attempt to write one picture book draft a month, AND to revise one and submit one manuscript as additional, optional goals. There will of course be more outstanding featured authors giving away fabulous prizes that will help you in your craft. All members will be able to join the 12 x 12 Facebook page, which serves as a support network, a question and answer pool, and a place to share resources. PLUS we have a brand new online forum, upgraded from the 2013 version, where members can share information and critique each other’s work.

More information, including registration at: http://www.juliehedlund.com/registration-for-2014/

The sign up deadline is February 28, 2014.

However, if for any reason you miss the deadline, don’t despair. You can still participate in the challenge (it can assist in motivating you to write the picture book that is in your head), except you won’t be in the running for the chance to win craft-related giveaways such as critiques, books, consultations, etc. from the monthly featured authors. But it just might give you the motivation you need.
